Ever Seen NYC This Empty Before? (I Have. Here’s Why I Went Anyway.)

The Day NYC Stood Still — And I Had to Keep Moving

THIS WAS DURING LOCKDOWN 2020.

Two weeks after the “flatten the curve” announcement, the city that never sleeps had gone completely silent. No taxis honking. No crowds spilling onto the sidewalks. Just empty streets and the hum of a world holding its breath.

I had an IT client at the Studio 54 building in NYC that day. A site visit I couldn’t postpone. And a company in Jersey City running a shelter that needed my help to keep their network running.

Most people were scared. Some were frozen. I don’t blame them — it was uncharted territory and fear was everywhere.

But I had a daughter at home. And a family to feed.

So I hit the road that morning, drove through the empty streets, made my appointments, and earned what I needed to keep the lights on. Sometimes you don’t get the luxury of staying home. Sometimes you have to face the silence, step into the unknown, and do what needs to be done.

I’m sharing this now not because it’s heroic — it’s just life. But if you’re reading this and you’re scared, stuck, or questioning whether you can make it through whatever storm you’re facing, I want you to know:

You can.

Courage isn’t about not being afraid. It’s about moving forward anyway. Especially when the ones you love are counting on you.

That’s the kind of person I am. That’s the kind of person I’ve always been.

And if you needed to hear that today — this one’s for you.
